Acrylic Top Mount Filament Spool Holder for CR-10 Enclosures
thingiverse
There are countless spool holders on Thingiverse, but none seemed to meet my requirements. I tried a half-dozen of them before giving up and designing one myself. Most were limited to single spool widths or sizes, while others broke within a week. Some required complex assemblies with bearings that needed precise adjustments. Determined to create the perfect spool holder, I set out to design something that would work seamlessly with 99% of spool sizes and widths. It had to be reliable for continuous use, and visually appealing as well. The result is an all-acrylic spool holder that fits perfectly with our CR-10 acrylic 3D printer enclosures. This spool holder can withstand heavy loads while holding the weighty 2.5Kg spools we use in production. Its design ensures a smooth operation, eliminating any need for adjustments or replacement parts. Although it was designed specifically for our CR-10 enclosures, it should work with any top-mounted enclosure for various printers. To make this spool holder, you will need thick 1/4" acrylic of any type and a 1.5" diameter, 150mm (6 inches) long acrylic rod. Alternatively, you can use a wooden rod. The piece of acrylic should be approximately 500mm by 300mm in size. You can cut out the acrylic on most laser cutters or take the DXF into a 3D editor and extrude it to 1/4". Then, 3D print all the parts using infill of 20-30% for added sturdiness. The caps prevent the rod from pulling through the sides. If you like this design but don't have access to a laser cutter or 3D printer, we offer complete acrylic spool holders online that you can purchase and use immediately.
