Acroterion refers to an architectural embellishment situated atop a flat base known as the acroter or plinth. It is positioned at the apex of the pediment in classical buildings, often mounted directly on it. Some versions can also be found at the outer corners of the pediment; these are called acroteria angularia because angulāria means corner. The design of an acroterion takes many forms such as a statue, tripod, disc, urn or palmette and even other sculpted elements. Acroteria can also be found in Gothic architecture designs. In addition to being used in building designs, they are often incorporated into furniture designs. The term originates from the Greek word akrōtḗrion which means summit or extremity, derived from the adjective akros meaning extreme or endmost. It was later adopted by the Romans as acroterium and has since become known as acroteria in the plural form of both the original Greek and Latin words.
