Then we made a hole in the cylinder and designed the speaker to stand upright with its exterior bottom flat. Since the iPhone speakers are located at the bottom of the device, our design is rounded at the bottom and circular overall, allowing space for sound waves to travel through the cylinder out into the air. Custom Section Objectives: Show how a simple cylinder can improve sound quality Audience: Students in grades 6-9 Preparation: Introduction of sound waves and/or principles of acoustics can be beneficial Steps: 1. Explain what an acoustic speaker is and can do. 2. Discuss the physics behind it. 3. Let students play their favorite song to the rest of the class through the speaker.
