Acomb Little Man

The intricately carved sandstone block stands at an impressive 86cm high, showcasing the figure of 'Acomb Man' in all its glory. Installed in 2011, it now proudly sits where the bridle path meets The Green in the quaint village of Acomb, Northumberland, UK. This remarkable find was unearthed in 1970 at Water's Meet (Howford), where the mighty Rivers North & South Tyne converge west of Hexham. For a whopping 30 years, it remained a prized possession at Acomb House before being sold and relocated to its current site. Stan Beckensall took on the task of compiling a comprehensive report on the carving and subsequently shared his findings with English Heritage. He revealed that experts from the Museum of Antiquities and Vindolanda Forts, situated along Hadrian's Wall, had confirmed that the carving likely originated during the Roman occupation in the 2nd or 3rd century. Paul Bidwell, a renowned expert at Arbeia Fort in Wallsend, made an astonishing claim: "It's in a native style and therefore very unusual and very rare – perhaps unique," he said. Stan Beckensall shared Paul's sentiment, stating that the carving is unmistakably meant to be Hercules. The demigod holds a sturdy club across his chest with one hand and a round object in the other, which may be either a purse or a dish. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5735075
