Acheulean Hand Axe Unveiled in Montieres Amiens Located in the heart of France, this exceptional artifact was crafted during the Lower Paleolithic era, a period spanning before 300,000 years ago. Made from high-quality flint, its dimensions are truly impressive: 99.3 mm in length, 60.6 mm in width, and an astonishing thickness of just 31.4 mm. The Acheulean hand axe is part of a larger collection of relics acquired by James Bell Bullitt during his extensive tour of western Europe in 1929. Upon returning to the United States, he generously donated these artifacts to the University of North Carolina, where they are now meticulously preserved and studied within the North Carolina Archaeological Collection, Research Laboratories of Archaeology at Chapel Hill. This remarkable specimen was skillfully recreated by Kay Waller, a renowned model maker, allowing us to better understand the craftsmanship and techniques employed by our ancient ancestors.
