Yayoi Kusama's Accumulation, created in 1963, showcases her distinctive style by transforming a wooden chair into a vibrant, surreal sculpture. The piece is comprised of sewn and stuffed fabric, adorned with paint. Kusama's use of hundreds of pillowy phallic forms creates an absurd atmosphere, challenging the viewer's perception of an ordinary object. Kusama's autobiography reveals that these sculptures helped her cope with traumatic experiences. She clarifies that making such objects is not a reflection of her obsession with sex, but rather a means to confront and overcome her fear. By reproducing these objects repeatedly, Kusama aimed to heal her disgust towards sex through what she termed "Psychosomatic art."
