Problem and Solution: Weakened grip strength can have far-reaching effects on many areas of life. Individuals with reduced grip strength or difficulty grasping small objects often struggle with efficiently holding and turning keys, particularly those that are compact in size. This innovative object allows people with low grip strength to easily turn locks by inserting their fingers into the holes, much like using a pair of scissors, and then turning the key in the lock. To ensure seamless compatibility with existing key rings, the tool was designed to allow the inserted key to be pushed up, maintaining accessibility to the key ring hole. In addition, the device features provision for cable ties that can be looped around a plug, enabling users to easily pull stubborn plugs out of outlet sockets. This secondary consideration was incorporated as a supplementary feature rather than a central focus. Sizing and Attachment: Standard square house keys were measured to inform our design, ensuring a snug fit within the key holder without requiring additional attachments. The interior 'pocket' of the key holder was carefully calibrated to accommodate the dimensions of the key, guaranteeing a secure hold. If the design needs to be adapted for alternative key sizes, simply measuring the new key and adjusting the interior pocket dimensions accordingly will suffice. Alternatively, the overall size can be adjusted using Cura software. The holder holes were intentionally designed to accommodate a range of finger sizes, promoting comfort while turning the key. This design also allows for ample space between holes for a keyring to pass through, facilitating easy attachment. Considerations and Design Decisions: When designing this key holder, our primary goal was to create a universal solution that maximizes accessibility. To achieve this, we minimized the attachment method, opting for a simple 'pocket' design that eliminates the need for additional components or attachments. This approach addresses issues like unscrewing bolts, which often require intense grip strength. The impermanent nature of the 'pocket' attachment also enables easy switching between keys, making it an ideal solution for users who frequently switch between different keys. By attaching a key to this holder, users can keep their most frequently used key readily accessible while still being able to easily switch between other keys as needed. Interactions and Considerations: This innovative key holder facilitates easier interactions with locks and plugs, allowing users to continue using their existing key rings while enjoying improved accessibility. The device also enables users to potentially switch which key is inside the holder, making it a valuable addition to any key ring. Innovative solutions like this key holder often go overlooked in favor of more prominent issues, but they can have a significant impact on the lives of individuals with low grip strength. By addressing these everyday problems, we aim to improve daily life for those who face challenges related to grip strength.
