Accessible Chess Board for the Visually Impaired MK I
thingiverse
This chess set was designed to be used by people with visual impairments. The chess board features raised squares to differentiate between white and black squares (black squares are raised). To tell pieces apart, we made the white pieces are half the height of the black pieces. There is a hole in each one of the squares to place pieces so they do not fall over when scanning the board. Each one of the pieces (except for the pawn) has a raised symbol on it so the user can tell pieces apart (a key to the piece types is at the end of this description). If a sighted person and a person with visual impairments are playing together, I would recommend having the sighted person wear a blindfold to make sure the game is fair. We intend to design a second version of this chess set soon so we can implement additional feedback we have received.
