Acanthus-leaf and grotesque boss C13th*
sketchfab
One of five distinctive bosses at South Nave Transept's intersection with the quadripartite ribbed timber vault in Rochester Cathedral features a grotesque canine figure surrounded by acanthus-leaf motifs possibly emerging from its mouth. McAleer (1996, 260-261) places the style of these bosses around 1340, yet Alexander (2006, 162) suggests the vaulting occurred shortly after the transept's completion in approximately 1240. The bosses have undergone repainting and gilding, likely during a restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the late 1800s, which aimed to revive the south nave transept.
