The Abukuma cave was unearthed in September 1969 during limestone mining operations at the current Kamayama quarry. By 1973, a tourist route had been developed within the inner cavern and made accessible to the general public. Visitors can explore a 600-meter sightseeing path, along with an additional 2,700 meters of restricted access tunnels, bringing the total length to approximately 3,300 meters. However, this measurement may be adjusted based on ongoing investigations. The Abukuma cave is believed to have formed around 80 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period when limestone crystals solidified.
