Abu Simbel is a renowned archaeological site boasting two colossal rock temples in southern Egypt on the western bank of Lake Nasser, approximately 290 kilometers southwest of Aswan. It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Nubian Monuments, which stretch from Abu Simbel downriver to Philae (near Aswan). The twin temples were originally hewn out of the mountainside during Pharaoh Ramesses II's reign in the 13th century BC, serving as a lasting monument to himself and his queen Nefertari. This monumental structure was intended to commemorate his alleged victory at the Battle of Kadesh and intimidate his Nubian neighbors. However, the complex was relocated in its entirety in the 1960s to an artificial hill constructed from a domed structure, situated high above the Aswan dam reservoir.
