The Abstract art movement is unapologetically dismissive of literal representations from the visible world. Artwork that transforms the natural world for expressive purposes is defined as abstract; that which originates from but does not replicate a recognizable subject is referred to as nonobjective abstraction. In the 20th century, the trend toward abstraction coincided with breakthroughs in science, technology, and shifts in urban life, eventually reflecting an interest in psychoanalytic theory. Subsequently, abstraction emerged in more purely formal terms, such as color, detachment from objective context, and a reduction of form to fundamental geometric designs and shapes.
