Strat Smith called a meeting when he was named NCTA executive secretary for the booming cable industry. The industry had to start thinking about national advertising and the conversation turned to creating a logo or symbol that would represent them as a whole. John Smith from the NCTA PR firm suggested an idea similar to the Electric Utility industry’s well-known "Reddy Kilowatt" icon, a cheerful stick figure drawn with lightning bolts and a light bulb head. Mr. Smith proposed a similar figure but with a TV tower body, coaxial cable arms and a picture tube head instead of a traditional face. John Smith quickly got to work sketching what would become the cable industry’s new mascot, Abel Cable, who was later joined by Ima Set.
