Jules Auguste Lemire was born on April 23, 1853, in the small village of Vieux-Berquin, near Hazebrouck. His parents ran a farm of 14 hectares, and he had two sisters and two brothers. Tragedy struck when his mother passed away at the age of eight, leaving him to be raised by his aunts. Despite these challenges, Lemire graduated in 1872 and went on to become a priest in 1878. He was appointed to Hazebrouck, where he quickly learned that not everyone spoke Flemish, including those from his home village. Lemire's academic career flourished at Saint Francis of Assisi College, where he taught Latin, Greek, philosophy, and poetry under the direction of Jacques Dehaene. By 1892, he had taken on a new role, overseeing the founding of Institution Saint-Jacques, which was completed in 1893.
