The monument comprises the abandoned remnants of Abberwick, a medieval village that once thrived in Northumberland. The village's earliest recorded history dates back to a 13th-century document, which notes it was part of the barony of Wark on Tweed. Like other villages in Northumberland, Abberwick suffered from a dwindling population between the late 13th century and 1336, with only six individuals left to pay taxes. The decline is largely attributed to wars with Scotland, consecutive crop failures, and the devastating effects of the Black Death. By the 17th century, however, the village's population had rebounded, with 17 households recorded. Yet, by the early 18th century, Abberwick was once again a deserted settlement, with most of its farms relocated to other areas within the township. Today, remnants of the village, the tower house, and its surrounding field system are visible as a series of earthen mounds.
