Abandoned Headstone - Kilbeg - Co. Galway
sketchfab
This abandoned headstone lies in an agricultural field in East Galway, carelessly discarded by stone masons during its carving process. The field itself was once an open quarry where limestone slabs could be easily extracted from the surface. Stone masons would often carve stones within a quarry and then remove them once they were completed, but this procedure came with a significant risk: the possibility of the stones breaking when being removed. Although this stone appears to be intact on its surface, local residents have proposed various explanations for why it was left in the middle of the field. It remains a poignant reminder of Galway's forgotten history and heritage of skilled stone masons.
