The Assault Amphibious Vehicle - designated AAVP-7A1 and previously known as Landing Vehicle, Tracked, Personnel-7, LVTP-7 for short - is a state-of-the-art amphibious assault vehicle built by U.S. Combat Systems, which recently rebranded from United Defense's division under FMC Corporation. The latest model of AAV-P7/A1 is the Marine Corps' go-to troop transporter and an essential component in its amphibious operations strategy. It plays a critical role for the Assault Amphibian Battalions, allowing them to rapidly transport ground assault forces along with their equipment onto foreign soil, either through land or from the high seas via amphibious assault ships. Its widespread adoption not only reflects the evolving nature of military warfare but also the enduring need for a reliable, high-performing vessel capable of executing demanding amphibious operations. Moreover, these cutting-edge vehicles offer greater efficiency compared to other operational options, effectively paving the way towards mechanized ground assaults in complex environments. They're referred to as amtracs by Marine forces, which stands for Amphibious Tractor and originated from their official name prior to 2018's major overhaul. After years of speculation, a clear successor has been pinpointed by Marine Commanders. This came about during June 2018 when the Marine Corps formally revealed they'd chosen BAE Systems in conjunction with Italian industrial powerhouse Iveco to design and develop their brand new Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV).
