The United States Navy initiated the VAX project, seeking an aircraft with enhanced range and payload as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk. Emphasis was placed on precise weapon delivery to minimize costs per target. In 1963, the VAL competition was announced, requiring proposals based on existing designs. Vought's submission, based on the F-8 Crusader fighter, was selected in February 1964 and designated A-7 Corsair II. The aircraft's first flight occurred on September 27, 1965, and it entered service in 1967. The A-7 Corsair II boasted advanced avionics for its time, including data link capabilities that enabled hands-off carrier landings when used with the approach power compensator or auto throttle. Notably, it participated in numerous close-air support missions over both North and South Vietnam during the war, with a state-of-the-art bombing and navigation system. The aircraft played a crucial role in Operations Linebacker I and II, leading up to the end of US involvement in the Vietnam War on January 24, 1973. The A-7 Corsair II served various roles during 'Nam, including escort and protection for rescue missions under the call sign Sandy. It participated in numerous air support missions throughout the war and continued to serve in other conflicts. From 1967 to 1971, a total of 27 US Navy squadrons received A-7A/B/C/E models, while the Air Force started receiving the A-7D in 1970. The last US Military Corsair II was retired by the end of 1998 and stored at Davis-Mothan AFB after three decades of service. Worldwide, the A-7 continued to serve until 2014 when Greece finally retired its final units. This versatile aircraft featured over 50 points of articulation on the main figure, including moving flaps, ailerons, and spoilers. It also had an opening canopy, deployable slats, folding wings, a deployable tail hook, and a functioning cockpit with flight controls. Numerous ERC dials facilitated control from one location, and various weapons sets offered mix-and-match options for multiple load-outs based on mission requirements. The figure was designed for use in Poser 6 and above, featuring conforming crew boarding ladders and FOD storage covers for added realism.
