In this stunning ceramic masterpiece, Leger reveals a captivating female portrait that is partially obscured and subtly framed by the subject's hands. This intriguing piece of ceramics expertly combines vibrant orange and contrasting black details, skillfully outlining the woman's face and delicate fingers. According to Y. Brunhammer (2005), "Léger's initial low reliefs from 1950-52 were inspired by bold paintings and still lifes created in 1936, 1937, and 1938 with striking contrasted colors, where objects and hues supplanted the 'subject' inherited from Renaissance traditions. These pivotal years saw Leger exploring large-scale mural decoration with his architect friends Robert Mallet-Stevens, Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, and later Paul Nelson, who had relocated to Paris in 1939 for the Hanging House project. Léger's ceramic work was driven by an unusual affinity with Roland Brice, who moved to Biot in 1949 to focus full-time on pottery production" (132).
