Human: Within Ancient History Grade 6, the students study various ancient civilizations including Mesopotamia, Kush, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. On a daily basis throughout the United States, students do not have access to museums; thus, bringing the opportunity for students to research museum collections and design an exhibit. This not only helps level the playing field and bridge the digital divide but also aids students in developing and practicing 21st-century skills necessary for their future careers. The integration of technology within Ancient History enables students to build models and artifacts that demonstrate the 6Cs - collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, communication, connections, and curiosity as they are aligned to primary and secondary sources. The 3D models selected from within the “Walk Through Time - Destination: Egypt" include the model of the Nile River, the Great Sphinx, the Great Pyramid of Giza, canopic jars, an ankh, the bust of Queen Nefertiti, and cartouches with hieroglyphics. Students have been hired by the Curator of a Museum to design a hands-on exhibit for presentation to their classmates and other sixth-grade classes. Museum visitors (participating students) will have a personal field journal/passport to record what is presented via the five presentations aligned to the Common Core ELA and SS-History Standards. Through this investigative unit, students will gain the skills of the 6 Cs - collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity, connections, and curiosity exploration while gaining knowledge of the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Kush, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Objectives Student learning objectives include the skills necessary to: Engage prior knowledge of word elements and context to determine meaning of unfamiliar words. Critically analyze primary and secondary sources for Ancient Civilizations. Connect and clarify main ideas by identifying their relationships to other sources. Collaborate to develop a persuasive piece to convince the Museum trustees that their project should be showcased at the Museum. Re-communicate information gathered via descriptive text, visuals, or other media. Present a comprehensive exhibit featuring an Ancient Civilization (Mesopotamia, Kush, Egypt, Greece, or Rome). Learn 3D imaging technology to represent realia/artifacts depicting their ancient civilization. Audiences The audience of this specific project is primarily sixth-grade, middle school, and upper elementary students. However, can be modified to integrate concepts taught in previous years or extended to expand depth for upper grades. This project is aligned to the Common Core standards, specifically addressing primary and secondary sources and evidence-based reasoning. This project can be enriched by incorporating more resources such as the Ozobot coding app. Materials Needed A Walk Through Time – Destination Egypt Student Handout.
