A Torso of Venus at The Barber Institute, Birmingham

myminifactory

This fragment of a full-length female figure was crafted by a Roman sculptor. Based on a lost Greek prototype dating from the 4th century BC, it is a work of art. Some believe the figure to be Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, disrobing before bathing, but it's more likely to be a semi-draped statue of her Roman equivalent, Venus. Unlike many incomplete statues discovered in the 18th and 19th centuries, this one has not had new limbs added. This object is part of "Scan The World", a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory. Through Scan the World, we're creating a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks, and landmarks from across the globe for public access at no cost. Scan the World is an open-source community effort. If you have interesting items around you and would like to contribute, email stw@myminifactory.com to learn how you can help.
