A Roman marble male portrait bust
myminifactory
A Roman marble portrait bust crafted during the reign of Caracalla showcases a distinctive drilling style in the hair characteristic of certain portraits of Septimius Severus and his son Caracalla. This unique style shift is linked to Septimius's and Caracalla's North African heritage, as well as Septimius's military background. The Roman elite often commissioned private portraits that mirrored the prevailing style of the ruling dynasties, and this piece deliberately emulates the hair, beard, and moustache sported by the early 3rd century A.D. ruling family. The rendering of the hair and beard, which lacks the typical drill work found in Septimius Severus's portraits, suggests an execution date during Caracalla's reign. Part of Bonhams' Antiquities Sale on July 6th, 2017 at New Bond Street in London, Lot 146: A Roman Marble Male Portrait Bust. Estimated value £50,000-£80,000. Sold for £100,000.
