Alexander Solzhenitsyn burst onto the scene in 1918 with a birth in Kislovodsk, Russia. A decorated veteran of World War II, he found himself behind bars for daring to speak out against Joseph Stalin's oppressive regime, ultimately spending a grueling 11 years locked away in harsh labor camps and exile. Solzhenitsyn poured his heart and soul into his writing, crafting searing portrayals of life under Soviet tyranny in works like The Gulag Archipelago. His literary talents were subsequently recognized with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970 and a Russian State Prize in 2007, but his life was cut short when he passed away in 2008.
