These images and texts reveal Rice's exploration of Seattle's rapid transformation. As sites and landscapes vanish from the cityscape, a new visual language arises: one driven by economic forces, fueled by tech innovation, and shaped by developments that often prioritize corporate interests over the needs of Seattle's diverse communities. In Drone Triptychs, these scenes and locations are dissected through a cutting-edge digital process – photogrammetry – which constructs a virtual 3D model by analyzing hundreds of two-dimensional photos. To capture all possible vantage points, many photos were taken using a drone, an airborne camera supported by 4Culture's 2015 Tech Specific grant. The models generated from photogrammetry can be scaled, rotated, inverted, animated, textured, or rendered as a wireframe. This act of virtualizing space often produces a glitchy, hollow, or flattened representation of the original site, mirroring many large-scale image-making processes that dominate Seattle's urban landscape.
