A Māori Facial Expression

The sculpture was crafted in direct response to a specific challenge that called for creating a representation of the muscles involved in facial expressions. To tackle this task, I delved into the rich cultural heritage of the Māori people and their remarkable haka performances. The pukana and whetero expressions were particularly inspiring, showcasing the intricate nuances of facial anatomy. Initially, the sculpture was brought to life using wax, which was then meticulously painted with oil. To capture its intricacies, it underwent a meticulous scanning process with the Artec Spider scanner, followed by refinement in Zbrush. Meanwhile, I added detailed labels highlighting key branches of the facial nerve (CNVII). This vital nerve plays a pivotal role in innervating numerous muscles responsible for conveying emotions through facial expressions.
