Musée de Cluny, National Museum of the Middle Ages, Paris, France. A small plaque stands here, recounting a tale of a hole in the ground unearthed back in 1676. Initially, this opening led to a cave described as a "large void." To prevent any accidents, the hole was subsequently covered over with wooden beams, and this plaque serves as a reminder to periodically inspect these support structures and replace them if they become rotten. Originally situated within the Convent des Mathurins (demolished in 1860), this plaque has found its new home at the Musée de Cluny, just a stone's throw away from where the convent once stood. Unfortunately, the location of the hole itself seems to have been all but forgotten. While it's likely not particularly noteworthy (considering Paris's numerous underground tunnels and ancient mines), I find this plaque to be the starting point for a Lovecraftian narrative: who knows what eerie secrets might lie hidden within that enigmatic void?
