A Model Lion - Foster 872 This 18th-century wax model of a lion, created by the skilled Indian artist Gangaram in 1790, showcases his remarkable talent for capturing the majesty and grandeur of the animal kingdom. The lion's body is made from a combination of wax and possibly dhuna, an aromatic gum extracted from the shal tree (Shorea robusta), which gives it a smooth and lifelike texture. Standing at 12.5 cm tall, this regal creature reaches its highest point in the mane, exuding confidence and power. The lion is perched atop a wooden base measuring 20.5 x 9.75 x 2 cm, providing stability and balance to the entire piece. The intricate details on the lion's face and body demonstrate Gangaram's exceptional skill as an artist, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and ferocity of this majestic creature up close. This remarkable model can be found in our collection, F872, and has also been featured on our blog at http://britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk/asian-and-african/2014/08/the-maratha-artist-gangaram-cintaman-tambat.html.
