A-maze-ing Gift Card Box
thingiverse
This gift card box is a unique present that challenges the recipient to solve a maze before revealing what's inside. It adds an extra layer of fun and personal touch to the gift, depending on how hard you want to make them work. There are two versions available, with different levels of difficulty. The 'open' top model has a visible maze that should take about a minute to open, while the 'blind' top model conceals the maze, making it more challenging and taking longer to solve. The cardtop part can be customized with a personal message, which can be created on the customizer page. To assemble the box, you'll need to glue and sand the pieces together. The printer requires no supports for all parts, but some gluing and light sanding may be necessary to make the pieces slide smoothly. After printing, simply visit the customizer page to create a customized message. Post-printing assembly is relatively easy, but if you forget to file the slider, it might stick and not have as nice of a feel to it. To assemble the box, print five parts: the bottom main section, the top of the main section, the bottom of the card holder, the top of the card holder, and the slider. The options for the top of the card holder and the top of the main section are varied, with one showing the maze and another hiding it. The card holder top can also be customized with different messages. Before gluing, test and adjust the slider to ensure it slides easily but has little play on both pieces. Use a straight file or sandpaper on a flat surface to avoid introducing play, and lightly sand the tabs to reduce friction. Clean out any burrs from the maze and check that the pin slides freely through it. If using the open model with semi-transparent plastic, use a permanent marker on the top of the pin for added visibility. Gluing is straightforward, using Krazy glue and clamping for a few minutes before assembly. Dry fit the pieces before gluing to ensure there are no printing artifacts. Once dry, insert the gift card, place the slider on the card holder, and work the pin through the maze to the fully closed position. In an update, it was discovered that rough edges on the top of the slider and card-holder top can cause stickiness when closing the maze. Filing down these areas resolves the issue.
