A manual transmission of the 1940s clutch disc
grabcad
I designed this component to be more compatible with my audience than a multiplate motorcycle disc. It features an asbestos lining bonded to a spring steel shaft, hard twisted ends crushable fan made from many thin straws. This allows torque to be transferred to a hub with several coil springs held between ends, one attached to the straws in a membrane fashion and the other riveted to a heavy steel hub that is splined for the input gear of the transmission gearbox.
