Considering the era when this statue was crafted, one might assume that the knight depicted is a pioneer. In reality, Santiago was established during the 16th century by Spanish pioneers: on February 12, 1541, Valdivia officially founded the city of Santiago del Nuevo Extremo to honor St. James, the patron saint of Spain, near the Huelén, renamed by the conqueror as "St. Lucia".
