A container for liquids or other beverages that people drink from is called a water bottle. Water bottles allow individuals to transport and drink a beverage from one location to another easily. Typically, water bottles are made of plastic, glass, or metal. Different shapes, colors, and sizes make up the variety of water bottles available today. In the past, water bottles were sometimes crafted from wood, bark, animal skins like leather, hide, or sheepskin. Water bottles can be either used once and thrown away or reused multiple times. When people choose to reuse their water bottles, they can use them for liquids such as juice, iced tea, alcoholic drinks, or soft drinks too. Using reusable water bottles reduces plastic waste and helps protect the environment. Since growing concerns over environmental impact and costs of disposable plastic water bottles started becoming a major issue, more people have begun choosing to fill multi-use water bottles instead. However, the sales and popularity of disposable plastic water bottles continue to rise significantly. In 2007, Americans consumed approximately 50 billion single-serve bottles of water. Since 2001, single-serve bottled water sales have fluctuated by as much as 70 percent, and this trend is expected to continue. The sale of single-serve bottled water in the United States has seen significant fluctuations since 2001, with a 70% increase recorded in just a few years. By 2016, a unique trend among Americans called "water bottle flipping" gained media attention nationwide.
