The United States Map Just Before Civil War Erupts The country was a complex mix of different opinions and values in the year 1860, on the brink of a great conflict. Each state is depicted in accordance with how they voted during that election year. Four presidential candidates participated in this crucial vote: Stephen A Douglas from the Northern States, John C Bell representing Southern interests, Vice President of The Confederate states Breckinridge who also led some groups within Kentucky, as well as Abraham Lincoln known for his stance against slavery expansion into Western territories beyond Missouri Line but strongly opposed by South since he could possibly abolish institution nationally which was not supported elsewhere except Illinois & its contiguous counties.
