A Hellenistic Nobleman at The British Museum, London
myminifactory
A Hellenistic aristocrat from 200-100 BC. Later Hellenistic statues on Cyprus show a greater sense of realism, as evidenced by fleshy faces, ruddy hair and sideburns. Despite bearing resemblance to Ptolemy VI of Egypt (180-145 BC), this colossal head is likely an generic image of a noble worshipper rather than a portrait of the ruler of Cyprus during that time period. It combines broader Hellenistic style with local carving traditions typical of the Dali area where it was discovered. This object is part of "Scan The World".
