A Gothick Folly
thingiverse
It recently struck me that the Gothic architectural style is perfectly adapted to 3D printing, as its typically pointed arches cleverly resolve the problem of spanning open spaces without requiring supports. A medieval cathedral seemed a bit overwhelming, so I created this folly instead. This structure might be found in the grounds of a large Victorian country house, but it's an entirely imaginative design and not based on any specific building. The statue inside could be of the young Queen Victoria, or you can choose to print it without the statue if you prefer. The larger model is too tall to fit my Makerbot Replicator+, so I printed it in two parts. However, there are pegs and sockets that help with positioning, and a little Superglue will securely hold them together permanently. The smaller model, with or without the statue, prints entirely in one piece. Neither model requires supports. The models shown in the pictures were printed with a raft, using default settings of 10% infill and a layer height of 0.2mm.
