This study of a dancer stands among more than thirty sculptures that Degas created of ballerinas. The clay or wax models complemented the numerous drawings he also made. Walter Sickert recalls being shown a little statuette of a dancer during a visit to Degas' studio, where it was nighttime and Degas held up a candle to reveal the succession of shadows cast by its silhouette. The sculpture remained unknown to the public until after the artist's death in 1917, when they were cast in bronze for sale. This object is part of "Scan The World". Scan the World is a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory, through which we are creating a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks and landmarks from around the globe for public access. Scan the World is an open source community effort, if you have interesting items nearby and would like to contribute, email stw@myminifactory.com to learn how you can help.
