August Weizenberg (Ritsik, April 6, 1837-Tallinn, November 22, 1921) was a renowned Estonian sculptor known for his exceptional craftsmanship. Born into a family of shoemakers, he developed a passion for woodcarving in Erastvere from 1858 to 1862, honing his skills under the guidance of experienced craftsmen. As the 1860s unfolded, Weizenberg pursued a career as a cabinetmaker in Frankfurt and Berlin, where he refined his techniques and expanded his artistic horizons. Thanks to a generous sponsorship by Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald, he traveled to Saint Petersburg to study under the tutelage of Alexander Bock, a respected master artist. Weizenberg's thirst for knowledge drove him to further his education at the Imperial Academy of Arts and later at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1870 to 1873. This rigorous training laid the foundation for his future success as a sculptor. Between 1873 and 1890, Weizenberg made Rome his home, where he continued to perfect his craft and create some of his most iconic works. His artistry has left an indelible mark on the world of sculpture, and his legacy continues to inspire artists to this day.
