I'm developing a practical application of my actual invention, and I've printed a proof-of-concept model as a test run. Since my first 3D printer arrived just yesterday, I haven't had the chance to print out the finished product yet. Other ant traps that have been designed here essentially feature a container of some kind, holding water as a trap. However, this method is problematic because it can evaporate quickly and become filled with debris. My approach differs in providing an irreversible barrier made up of a strong-smelling substance repulsive to ants. It consists of a small dish for containing the substance, topped by a waterproof lid to shield it from rain. You may be wondering what potent scent could be effective as this ant-deterrent; I have discovered that talcum powder serves perfectly for this purpose, with ants thoroughly disliking its presence. The prototype visible in the attached picture comprises an inverted jar lid covered over by an upside-down can of tuna - a somewhat unsightly solution, yet effective nonetheless. As displayed in the picture, it has managed to maintain a completely ant-free status on all my feeders for two summers straight. Plus, due to its minimal upkeep requirements, just one application lasts throughout the spring and fall periods. This design functions under exactly the same principles, with additional convenience provided by an even cleaner approach. The process involves spreading a thin layer of talcum powder into the small container at the base, placing it atop a metal support on which to hang it once you've fitted it securely around a post/hook resting within the lid - after ensuring a snug fit via proper caulk sealing. Before installation begins, however, I suggest locating a hardware store to procure one drill hole fitting in for easy hook insertion - as initially thought out, my intention had been including this very detail; unfortunately though it proved extremely hard printing since you cannot see exactly where all these little intricacies are going on inside 3d printed items prior when your only viewing method relies on the exterior design itself. Some users have noted a problem with using other substances: ants are quite likely to feed upon regular cornstarch in comparison; what's more there have even been statements made regarding alternative natural deterrents such as cinnamon, black pepper powder, garlic paste and/or mint powder each also showing considerable effect.
