The battery adapter arrived yesterday and it powers my instrument perfectly using a 7809 regulator, a heat-sink and a wall-wart set to 12V output; this simple combination works extremely well for me! Initially, I settled on a fast fix since it would suffice - after all, speed is key when working under time constraints! Although a refined design would be an upgrade worth considering, for now the quick solution will have to do. Future possibilities could include encasing everything in clear silicone sealant or a specialized compound (using RTV in particular seems like an effective choice) - whether I go that route or not is yet to be seen, but at least there's another angle of attack.
