900 North Michigan in Chicago stands tall at 871 feet (265 m), making it the eighth tallest building in Chicago and the 31st tallest in the United States. Developed by Urban Retail Properties in 1988, this upscale sister to Water Tower Place was built as a vertical mall along the Magnificent Mile. The building boasts a large shopping mall called 900 North Michigan Shops, featuring Bloomingdale's at its rear, with luxury shops and restaurants filling the remaining spaces. Known as the "Bloomingdale's Building," it opened with Henri Bendel as a junior anchor. The retail area's layout reflects lessons learned from Water Tower Place, directing foot traffic past more shops by placing escalators in parallel rather than zig-zags. Originally, offices occupied floors 8-29, but floors 21-29 were converted to condo units in 2007. The Four Seasons Hotel occupies the middle floors (30-46), while floors 47-66 are part of the 132 East Delaware Residences, consisting of 106 condominiums. A large parking garage with retail and a medical clinic is located at the rear half of the block, facing Rush Street. The exterior features limestone and green glass that reflect light, with a steel skeleton supporting a concrete frame on upper floors. Cranes were used for the lower floors but had to be replaced for the concrete portion due to material changes. Four lit lanterns atop the structure give it a distinctive skyline presence, changing colors during Christmas season.
