The tooth herringbone gear possesses a 5mm bore and is printed using PLA material. It is utilized in a Wade extruder, where the nut trap has been adjusted to be closer to the shaft for optimal performance. The base of the gear has been enlarged to provide a thicker wall that supports the set screw, thus preventing deformation and failure. As of March 2018, these printed gears have exceeded expectations with no base failures after 4 years, despite replacing 3 gears across 4 printers. Two potential gear replacements may have been due to user error.
