Volcanic bombs are molten rock globules (pyroclasts) that equal or exceed 64 mm in diameter. They form when a volcano expels viscous lava fragments during an eruption. Volcanic bombs can be launched kilometers away from the volcanic caldera. During flight, the most fluid ones tend to acquire aerodynamic shapes (twists or spindles), while cooling to varying degrees. If the exterior of a volcanic bomb solidifies during its flight, it may develop a cracked outer surface as its interior expands. This type of bomb is known as bread-crust bombs in English. Volcanic bombs pose a significant threat as they can cause severe impact damage, burns, and fires in the eruption zone and surrounding areas.
