Polished Slate Fragment, Hot Springs Village, Port Moller, Alaska CAT# 77-47-U91 Okada excavations HHU, Level 5. Hot Springs 2B. 500-800 CE. The massive village of Hot Springs sits on the shore of Port Moller, where the southern Bering Sea meets the Alaska Peninsula. Excavation efforts have spanned a century, with multiple teams contributing to our understanding of this ancient settlement. Two primary occupation periods stand out: 2000 BCE-1000 BCE and 100 CE-800 CE. The Hot Springs artifacts showcase the results of extensive research supported by NSF grants 0137756, 1204020, 1139266, and 1321411. H. Maschner leads this investigation as Principal Investigator. The initial digitization process was completed at the IVL at Idaho State University, with subsequent processing undertaken at Global Digital Heritage.
