Harpoon Fragment. Hot Springs Village, Port Moller, Alaska CAT# 77-47-T233 Okada excavations HHT, Level 5B. Hot Springs 1B. 1600-1300 BCE. The massive village of Hot Springs sits proudly on the shore of Port Moller, boasting a commanding presence on the southern Bering Sea's Alaska Peninsula side. Uncovering its secrets has been a labor of love for numerous teams over the past century, each contributing their piece to the puzzle. Main occupations at this fascinating site span two distinct periods: 2000 BCE-1000 BCE and 100 CE-800 CE. These ancient inhabitants left behind an array of artifacts that would eventually find their way into the hands of researchers. The Hot Springs artifacts proudly bear witness to the tireless efforts of investigators who worked tirelessly under grants NSF 0137756, NSF 1204020, NSF 1139266, and NSF 1321411. At the helm of this research journey was H. Maschner, a principal investigator driven by an insatiable curiosity about our collective past. Digitization work initially took place at the IVL at Idaho State University, where experts painstakingly brought these artifacts to life in digital form. Further processing and refinement were then undertaken at Global Digital Heritage, yielding a treasure trove of information that continues to captivate us today.
