This gravestone is located in Tennessee. "His faith in the people never wavered". Significance & Research (w/ citations) The Object: A Gravestone Details about the Object: The object is a statue with a square base that has an opening underneath almost like arches, on top of the square base is a pencil like object that extends straight up, at the top of the pencil like object there is an eagle. The whole statue is a significant link to the president, At the top of the statue there's something missing which is an American flag draped over the top just under the eagle. President: Andrew Johnson, 17th president who served from 1865-1869 Andrew Johnson was a Democrat. Either "Faith in the people"-> pardon and amnesty confederate soldiers OR Constitution, (got impeached which involves the constitution) Veto REconstration bills, or Becoming President post assassination, OR Impeachment Presidential Role: Executive Action: Andrew Johnson decided to not focus on reconstruction, instead he focused on making life harder for slaves. Andrew Johnson negatively contributed a plan for reconstruction which failed. "During Reconstruction, a lack of political focus on the effort failed to solve the sectional wounds, and the elimination of the freed slaves' newly gained civil liberties failed to bring about long-term racial integration." (LitPick) Impact on America: This is important to American history because Johnson's reconstruction plan impacted many people.
