7.62 MM Bullet The 7.62×51mm NATO rifle cartridge was born from a need for standardization among NATO countries in the 1950s. Developed as a standard for small arms, it's often confused with the Russian 7.62×54mmR cartridge, which is slightly longer and has a rimmed design. Introduced to U.S. service in the late 1950s via the M14 rifle and M60 machine gun, it eventually fell out of favor as infantry adopted the 5.56×45mm NATO M16 rifle. Despite this, many firearms continue to use the 7.62×51mm NATO round, including marksman/sniper rifles, medium machine guns like the M240, and special operations forces' rifles. This cartridge sees action both on foot and mounted on vehicles, aircraft, and ships.
