In 2463, Coventry Metal Works introduced their second BattleMech, the COM-1A Commando. Designed for the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces and one of the first 'Mechs ever created for reconnaissance, the Commando was significantly lighter and faster than its predecessors, yet still utilized basic BattleMech technology. The Commando proved capable of destroying much heavier Kuritan Gladiators during the first large-scale battle between BattleMechs in 2475 on Nox. The installed Large Laser caused several issues, prompting the introduction of other 'Mechs like the Wasp in 2464 and the Stinger in 2479, which were better suited for scouting and even mounted jump jets. The Commando's profile underwent a radical transformation with the introduction of the sophisticated COM-2D variant in 2486, exchanging laser weaponry for short-range missiles and turning the machine into a formidable striker. COM-7B Following Coventry's conquest by the Word of Blake, the Jihadists modified the 7S to meet their specifications. The 7B retains one ER Medium Laser in the left arm but adds two Flamers, making it a lethal threat to unarmored infantry. A compact cockpit makes room for two SRM-4s, which are still fed by a CASE-protected ammunition bin. Weight savings enabled engineers to add enough jump jets to propel the Commando up to 120 meters at a time. Additionally, they added an extra ton of armor.
