608 Bearing Mod for Planetary Bearing Spool Holder
thingiverse
I like @nenoff's spool holder design so much(especially the four claw base) and planetary gears are always fun to play with. But unfortunately, the planetaries are just didn't work out for me. They rotate fine when fiddled with my hands, but they just wouldn't rotate smoothly when put underneath that kilogram or so of weight. I think the reason is that the tiny irregularities of the perimeter walls of the parts will create "bumps", some of the bumps will have high enough static friction to make the spool stuck. I've printed 7 or 8 of the planetaries using different settings(layer height, seam alignment, raft so on), they all have the same issue. The original author says his design is optimized for an enclosure, I use a standard desktop setup, maybe that's the reason? IDK... But I really wanted to put that beautiful base to use, so I decided to adapt it to 608s. The design is pretty straight forward, a fitting wheel for the 608s with the same size as the original planetary bearing, and changed the shaft ends to fit the 8mm inner hole of the 608. To utilizing the original idler spool wheels, I didn't change the middle part of the shaft. And all holes have a tolerance of .2mm. There're 3 optional files, 2 of them are left and right hubcaps. The other one is a convenient shaft adapter to make this shaft compatible with the original planetary bearings. I have to point out, I didn't actually print these specific uploaded STL files, I settled on the last prototype print(photos you see, they're thinner for fast test prints), and made some final minor touches or fixes for the upload.
