Steps are added into the hull design to achieve more speed with less horsepower and more fuel efficiency. The steps provide lift, which reduces the wetted surface for greater efficiency and speed. The steps break up the wetted surface rather than one long one. Lift production is more efficient for a surface with a smaller length to beam ratio. As water leaves the front edge of the step, water pressure pushes up on the following hull.
