Here's what it is like working with 60 to 20 reduction gears when switching from a 5mm motor drive to a 3mm drive shaft - the inspiration behind this comes from my memories of a Model Electronics Corp. SuperGear set that I used on one of my R/C airplanes, specifically "the Electric Red Air Vented Rascal." Take a look at the first "test flight" video here: brainless.org/MultiMedia/RC/Video/Capt.Kill4Fun/theElectricRedAirVentedRascal/theElectricRedAir-VentedRascal40ARF-MegaMotors.wmv. Before this, people didn't think that an electric plane could perform so well - until they saw "the Electric Red SIG Kadet Senior." This project is part of the many entries submitted to the makerzine.com/go/makerbot contest, found at blog.makezine.com/archive/2010/04/makerbot_giveaway.html. I created these gears as a rough estimate, knowing that printed plastic parts won't require precise tolerances like real gear teeth for the MakerBot Printer would - they work fine as is.
