This is a filter holder for a 6-inch Orion Dobsonian telescope that holds and stores thin filter material such as solar filters or color-blocking filters. Simply cut the filters to size, store them in stiff folders when not in use, and reuse the filter material with this design. It allows you to have only one large filter holder for all your filter needs, making it a convenient solution. There are two designs available: one has a bottom filter plate and tube as a single piece that requires supports, while the other is 2 pieces with separate plates that need to be glued together after printing. The tube should be aligned so it's flat with the inside surface of the bottom filter plate. If it's pushed too far in, remove material from the tube until it's even with the filter surface. Both designs require a top filter plate, hinge clip, and 3 tab clips. They also need a 2mm x 30mm pin for the hinge, but the clips can hold the filter holder together without it. The hinge allows you to open the filter while installed on the telescope for easy swapping or replacement. You shouldn't print the Filter Holder Assy Closed or Filter Holder Assy Open STL files, as they're included only for assembly and reference purposes. Due to the size of the telescope, this design requires a full 220mm build plate. I'm considering creating a holder that can be printed in pieces on a smaller build plate and then glued together. The pieces are designed to fit tightly to prevent light leakage, clip removal, or filter loss when the telescope is horizontal. Some sanding may be necessary due to printer tolerances. You can print it in any color you like, but paint the inside of the tube with matte black paint for maximum light blocking and sealing. Use a light-absorbing paint that matches the inside of the actual telescope for optimal performance.
